Veterinary FAQ

  1. Where is the Veterinary Clinic?
The Veterinary Clinic is located at 2323 55th Street, between Pearl St. and Arapahoe Ave. in Boulder, Colorado. We are located just to the east of the main shelter.
  2. Do I need an appointment?
Yes. The Veterinary Clinic is open Monday through Saturday by appointment only. We do our best our best to accommodate our clients who have immediate needs. If your pet is experiencing a medical emergency, please contact your nearest emergency animal hospital. To make an appointment, please call 330-442-4030, ext. 680.
  3. How do I pay for my veterinary visit?
Payment in full is expected at the time of the service. The Veterinary Clinic accepts cash, checks, and all major credit cards. To help guardians with planning and managing their finances for their pets' veterinary services, the Veterinary Clinic is now offering CareCredit. Saving up? Our Veterinary Clinic can assist you with a Layaway Plan to help you save for more expensive treatments. Speak to a clinic receptionist about how we can best accommodate your needs.
  4. Do you have programs for low-income families?
Yes. Our Veterinary Clinic offers the SHARE Program, which provides discounts on medical care to clients that qualify as low income. In this way, we can help ensure that companion animals receive proper medical care and remain in their homes with their guardians. This program is limited to families living in Boulder or Broomfield counties. Qualifying patients must be spayed or neutered to receive discounted services. To see if you qualify for the CARE program, bring proof of residence and income to our veterinary clinic during regular business hours.
  5. Does my pet have to be an alumnus of HSBV to use your clinic? Am I required to use your Veterinary Clinic if I adopt an animal from HSBV?
No. The Veterinary Clinic is open to the public regardless of where you obtained your pet. Revenue generated by the Veterinary Clinic directly supports the mission of the Humane Society of Boulder Valley by funding health care for homeless and abused animals. We encourage our adopters to utilize the veterinary clinic of their choice.
  6. What is a New Adoption Exam?
We encourage all adopters to visit a veterinarian soon after adoption for an examination of their new pet. This first visit establishes a relationship between your new pet and your veterinarian. Many veterinary clinics in the Boulder area offer complimentary examinations for newly adopted pets. Contact your veterinary clinic to see if they offer this and if there are any time restrictions. At the visit, the health care team will review your new pet's vaccination history and make recommendations that will set your pet up for a lifetime of wellness. To make an appointment at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley's Veterinary Clinic for a new adoption exam, call 303-442-4030 ext. 680.
  7. How can I make my pet's visit to the vet less stressful?
First, make sure your dog is on a leash or your cat is secure in a pet carrier when arriving to the veterinary clinic. Although your pet may be fine off-leash, other patients in the clinic may be stressed and may make your pet nervous. Second, we recommend positive reinforcement every time your pet pet visits the clinic. Bring yummy treats with you to the visit! You can use very small pieces of Natural Balance (sold in our retail store), cheese, hot dogs or any other highly palatable, small treat that your pet LOVES!! By rewarding your pet, you may help him or her actually earn to look forward to the visits. If you pet is particularly nervous or has a history of aggression, contact our Training Center for support and suggestions.
