The Humane Society of Boulder Valley hosts a free Pet Loss Support Group for those who have experienced, or who anticipate, the loss of their companion animal. The group meets on the first Saturday of each month from 1 – 2:30 p.m., with both virtual and in-person options to meet. In-person groups are hosted in the HSBV Library. To attend virtually, please call 303-604-5331 or email email@example.com to receive a virtual meeting link.
Although euthanasia will be the most likely cause of loss experienced by those who visit HSBV, some may also struggle to decide when or how to make a euthanasia decision for their ill or ageing pet. Others might still be looking for a pet that has gone missing, or need help in coming to terms with pet relinquishment. Regardless of the cause or reason, the loss of a pet can be devastating, and we’re here to help.
Richard Mercer, Group Facilitator, is a grief counselor for TRU Community Care. In addition to giving talks and providing grief workshops for various community groups, university classes, and a federal prison, he has facilitated grief groups for TRU since 2014. He recognizes that grief for most people, although painful, is a natural healing process. As part of this healing process, what most grieving people can use is supportive companionship and sometimes a little guidance.
